How To Maximize Summer Training As a Student-Athlete

While the last school bell may have just rung for summer, it will not be long until classes start up again, and summer becomes a distant memory. However, for many student-athletes, the work doesn’t stop once the books are put away. In fact, summers can be home to some of the most grueling workout schedules, and coupled with hot temperatures and humidity, summer training is no joke!

So how can a student-athlete best prepare for an upcoming season? The Marc Pro team has some tips that can help you reach the top of your game when it counts—the summer!

This might seem like an obvious tip, but many student-athletes forget just how much of an impact summer training has until it is too late. Skipping workouts may seem like a good idea to help you “enjoy summer,” but analyze what your goals are and remember the function of each workout. Each workout has a purpose—to help you become a better athlete.

2. Make a Schedule & Stick to It

Your coach may be sending you two-a-days or doubles that you need to follow during the summer, but you still need to take into account other responsibilities that you may have, including working or summer school. Take the time to write out your schedule each week, and include naps to allow you to maximize your recovery post-workout.

3. Take a Nap

So we may have just mentioned this, but recovery is so important that it needs to be highlighted more than once! Naps two hours post-workout allow the body to enter a restorative state, even with only 20 minutes of rest! In addition, consider adding other restorative practices to your daily routine, including stretching and using the Marc Pro to flush waste out of muscles, and bring nutrients into the body.

4. Eat Right

The corndogs at the State Fair might be tasty as is the ice cream at the beach, but make it a point to maintain healthy eating habits to help with recovery and allow you to maximize the effects of your workouts. There’s nothing wrong with a treat from time to time, but remember, moderation is key!

5. Communicate With Your Coach

The summer does not mean that communication with coaches comes to a halt. This is a great chance to speak with your coach about any questions that you have about training, catch up on weekly workouts, and learn more about your sport. Also, make sure to communicate any injuries that arise so that you and your coach can make an action plan early.
