How it Works

How Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) Works

The Marc Pro is intended for muscle conditioning by stimulating muscle in order to improve or facilitate muscle performance. The Marc Pro is not intended to be used for therapy or treatment of medical diseases or medical conditions.

The Marc Pro muscle conditioning device was developed using 30 years of medical device experience. The technology has been used for years in sports medicine and with players and trainers from more than 60 professional teams. The technology has also been researched extensively with more than 14 peer reviewed published articles.

The physiologic effects of Marc Pro described here have been proven through placebo controlled clinical studies using our specific proprietary technology.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) Fact and Fiction

Marc Pro is not designed to build muscle. There are many EMS products that claim to create “six pack abs” or “explosive strength” while sitting on the couch, but these claims do not match the philosophy or beliefs of Marc Pro for several reasons.  We feel that the data available regarding these claims is questionable and even those that have tried muscle building with electrical stimulation admit the attempts to be extremely painful. More importantly we’ve been in the electrical stimulation industry for more than 30 years and our consultant team has been in the strength and fitness industry for even longer; and with all of that experience we’re yet to see real life and practical evidence of muscle building while sitting on the couch.

On the other hand Marc Pro can be an extraordinary tool for muscle recovery, conditioning and performance. The fact that we don’t even attempt to build muscle allowed us to greatly alter our root technology to focus and be more ideal in the movement of nourishment and waste associated with muscle conditioning.

How the Marc Pro Helps Muscle Recovery

The basis for post exercise recovery is the normalization of tissue through the movement of nourishment and waste. The Marc Pro muscle conditioning device creates unique, strong, but completely non-fatiguing, muscle contractions that set off a cascading series of physiologic events. We call this a Muscle Activated Recovery Cascade, or “MARC” for short.

Our research showed that it starts with activation of the chemical neurotransmitter Nitric Oxide (NO). Nitric Oxide causes significant blood vessel dilation, which in turn causes flow to increase bringing more oxygenated blood and nutrients to the area. The lymphatic and venous systems also require and benefit from localized muscle activity. Because of this, using the Marc Pro after physical activity helps move the related waste and deoxygenated blood away from the fatigued area(s). This exchange of nourishment and waste, without stress or fatigue, accelerates the recovery of the muscle.

How the Marc Pro Improves Muscle Performance

The Marc Pro does more than accelerate the recovery process. When used on a consistent basis, the Marc Pro actually improves overall muscle performance in two ways:

  • First, decreasing the down time between workouts allows you to accelerate muscle development through a disciplined training program.
  • Second, when the same Muscle Activated Recovery Cascade (Nitric Oxide, vascular dilatation, more oxygenated blood and nourishment) takes place on a regular basis, the result demonstrated in our research is the development of new blood vessels (capillaries) – a process known as angiogenesis. More capillary blood vessels in a muscle equals more oxygenated blood and related supplies in the muscle and more deoxygenated blood and waste out of the muscle. By increasing the overall throughput of nourishment and waste to and from the muscle through angiogenesis, the muscle has an increased capacity to do more work – it performs better.

In a recent research study, when the Marc Pro technology was applied for the first time, limb blood flow increased by 200%. After using Marc Pro five days a week for three weeks, limb blood flow increased by 247% upon application. This additional increase or reserve was possible because the consistent use resulted in new additional vessels in the area (angiogenesis) giving more capacity to the region. Using The Marc Pro

The Marc Pro electronic muscle conditioning device is comfortable and very easy to use. There are two independent channels (A and B) and two self adhesive electrodes (per channel) that stick to the skin. The two electrodes connected to channel A can be used on one muscle or group of muscles; while the two electrodes connected to channel B can be used on another muscle or group of muscles.

Once connected it’s as simple as turning up the intensity dial for each channel. The intensity is turned up at the users pace. Initially it will feel like a very faint pumping or heartbeat sensation, but as the dial is increased the muscle contraction will get stronger and stronger. A strong and visible contraction is desirable and possible in most situations. Of course the contractions should not be increased beyond the comfortable range. And remember, what makes Marc Pro so unique is that even strong visible contractions are non-fatiguing to the area; which is ideal for our conditioning goals.

A typical session should last 30-60 minutes while sitting or lying in a relaxed and comfortable position. If being used for recovery, sessions are typically performed 1-2 timer per day as needed until recovered. For conditioning and enhanced performance the only difference is consistency. Using Marc Pro proactively (e.g., 1-2 times per day 3 or more days per week) creates the conditioning benefits that will not only help muscles recovery better, but also help them perform better.
